Having a spring ‘staycation’? Head to your local library

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — As many West Michigan schools take the week off for spring break, local libraries are offering programming for kids who aren’t heading out on vacation.

Kent District Library is hosting its first “staycation,” a series of events for all ages taking place throughout its district. Some of the events include Super Smash Bros. tournaments for teens, hula hoop dancing classes and shows from Maciek the Magician.

A lot of the programming, like a Birds of a Feather presentation from the Blandford Nature Center, Mad Science Presents Fire and Ice shows and events about the upcoming solar eclipse aim to continue learning outside of the classroom.

“The really great thing about school is that it introduces people to learning in lots of different ways, but sometimes, as we all know, learning can start to feel like work,” KDL Programming Specialist Amber Elder told News 8. “There’s nothing wrong with that, but we want to bring back some of the magic and the adventure of learning that — depending upon how a kid feels about school, where they’re at specifically in their schooling — they might miss out on.”

She said KDL hopes its staycation will encourage patrons to “see the library in new ways, as a destination to come to when they can’t go away.”

In Muskegon, Hackley Public Library is hosting a ‘Crafty Spring Break’ starting April 1, with activities planned throughout the week for kids, teens and families. Patrons can stop in for activities like diamond art taking place Monday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. or a LEGO Build taking place Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

In Ottawa County, Holland’s Herrick District Library will be hosting movie mornings on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the north branch. It will also host ‘crafternoons,’ where patrons can stop by for an eclipse-inspired craft from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. each weekday throughout spring break.

Other libraries throughout West Michigan are hosting events for spring break. Head to your local library’s website for more information.
