It’s time to bust out the Sorting Hat because you’re about to enroll at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Every Harry Potter fan remembers the day they turned twelve because it officially confirmed our status as a muggle, meaning we’d never be able to experience the magic of Hogwarts — or, of course, possess any magical qualities.

Naturally, we lived vicariously through Harry and company through the Harry Potter books, movies, and many video games. But now, we get to experience the magical life for ourselves with Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, an upcoming mobile game that gives us the chance to carve out our own experience at Hogwarts with characters of our own.

Set in the 1980s — after the fall of Voldemort and death of Harry’s parents, but before Harry, Ron, and Hermione start at Hogwarts — the game will allow players to experience “normal” life at Hogwarts, from classes to clubs, while interacting with iconic Hogwarts teachers like Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, Minerva McGonagall, and Hagrid. Who knows, maybe we’ll stumble into Bill and Charlie Weasley, who would definitely have been students at Hogwarts in the ’80s.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery was developed by Jam City, the developer behind Marvel Avengers Academy. The company teamed up with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, which will likely launch the free (with in-app purchases) mobile game in 2018 under its Portkey Games label, which is dedicated to games set within the Wizarding World as created and inspired by J.K. Rowling.

“There are not many Harry Potter titles in the App Store because J.K. and her team are very selective,” Jam City president Josh Yguado said in a statement. “But the creative vision we had and the artist we brought forward to work on the game got them comfortable with working with us.”

We’re really excited to embark on an adventure of our own when Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery launches in the App Store, Google Play, and Amazon Appstore in 2018.

This new game will join the previously announced game from Pokemon Go’s Niantic Labs, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, which will also be released under the Portkey Games label sometime in 2018.
