Harlem High School Alumni Foundation hosts 1st scholarship fundraising gala

HARLEM, Ga (WJBF)- The Harlem High School Alumni Foundation is celebrating some of Harlem’s most influential alumni and faculty in their first gala event, “2024 Legends on the Lawn.” This fundraising event will directly support student scholarships & grants.

To date the organization has awarded around $17,000 in scholarships with another $100,000 pledged over the next 10 years.

The HHS Alumni Foundation works to connect alumni to the school and elevate current students’ educational opportunities through scholarships, grants, and networking. The nonprofit raises money for scholarships, connect alumni with current students in a mentorship program, and provides wrap-around program aides in the form of school supplies and snacks.

On Saturday, the foundation will host its 1st gala to raise money for scholarships and to honor two alumni who have had major influence in and shown generosity to their community. And two former faculty members who have had a significant impact on their students will be honored.

Roy Lewis taught drama at Harlem for nearly 30 years. He had an incredible impact on hundreds of students during that time. Inez Brown was an Algebra teacher at the school for more than 30 years. At least one former math teacher at the school credits Brown for fostering her love of math.

E.G. Meybohm is the first of two distinguished alumni being honored. He is not only a graduate of Harlem but returned to teach and coach basketball. He’s the founder of one of the largest residential realty companies in the market and well known for his philanthropy.

Jarthur Harris Sr. is the second alumni honoree. Over the years he has made great economic and philanthropic impacts to the Harlem community. He has served many important roles in community organizations including the Harlem Housing Authority, Harlem Community Development Project, and Columbia County Chapter of the NAACP.

The semiformal event will be on Saturday, April 27 at 6 p.m. on the Harlem Public Library Lawn.
