Devin Haney will fight Ryan Garcia in New York this evening, as the old foes resume their rivalry.

Haney and Garcia went 3-3 across six amateur bouts, and now the 25-year-old Americans meet as professionals for the first time. Before Garcia missed weight on Friday, the bout in Brooklyn would have marked Haney’s first defence of the WBC title, which he won with a clinic against Regis Prograis in December – one month after vacating the undisputed lightweight belts.

The champion will enter Saturday’s main event unbeaten, while Garcia has lost just once as a professional, suffering a body-shot stoppage by Gervonta Davis one year ago. Garcia bounced back in December, however, finishing Oscar Duarte.

Garcia’s recent behaviour out of the ring has raised concerns over his mental health, and he missed weight by three pounds on Friday – before honouring a bet to pay Haney $500,000 for each pound overweight – meaning he is ineligible to take Haney’s title.
