It was another Sunday morning of sometimes heated but always civil political debate on Hancock and Kelley, Sunday, April , 21, 2024.    John Hancock, Republican consultant, on the right, and Michael Kelley, Democrat consultant, on the left, took on the following topics:

  • St. Louis’ Board of Aldermen approves legislation to bring back ‘red light’ traffic cameras amid a simmering feud between progressive Mayor Tishaura Jones and progressive Aldermanic President, Megan Green, over implementation.  Both support the program even though it’s almost certain to lead to costly litigation for the City of St. Louis.  The Missouri Supreme Court ruled red light traffic cameras were unconstitutional 9 years ago.

  • Missouri Republican Lt. Governor, Mike Kehoe, took issue with Kansas City’s Democrat mayor’s apparent pledge to make KC a ‘sanctuary city’ for migrants.  Kehoe called the idea ‘insane’.

  • Republicans in the Missouri Legislature have pushed through ‘school choice’ legislation, making concessions to get it passed.  A school choice supporter delivered dessert brownies to lawmakers, claiming they were laced with dog feces, in protest of the concessions.  Lawmakers reported the incident to capitol police.

  • The Madison County, IL, Board approved a measure to put a non-binding referendum on the ballot to let voters weigh in on the possibility of separating from the Chicago area and forming a new state.

  • Former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial has begun in New York.  A jury has been seated.  Mr. Trump says the trial may actually boost his election chances in November.

  • The U.S. House passes an aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.  Republican Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, supported the measure along with House Democrats, potentially risking his future as speaker with threats from fellow Republican Congresswoman, Marjorie Taylor Greene, to seek Johnson’s ouster.

  • A new Pew survey suggests Catholic voters will help reinstate abortion rights in states where it’s on the ballot in November, including Missouri.

  • Our Quote of the Week was from Cardinals Hall of Famer Manager, Whitey Herzog, who died this past week at age 92.
