Gwen's Guns and Goods in West Lafayette offers items for the hunt and for the home

WEST LAFAYETTE − West Lafayette is a community of sportsmen, but until recently there wasn't a store in the village selling guns, ammo and other related items.

That changed recently with Gwen Bordenkircher opening Gwen's Guns and Goods at 103 W. Main St. It was previously home to East Coast Risk Management, a consulting firm owned by Gwen's husband, Stephen Bordenkircher, the village's former mayor. Gwen also operates the nearby Kirk Street Event Center.

Gwen will be running the new shop with help from Stephen and their son, John. The business offers shotguns, rifles, pistols, revolvers, camouflage clothes, ammo, rain jackets and ponchos, turkey calls, fishing poles and even some general home décor.

There was no big celebration on opening day. Gwen just wanted to open the doors and see what happened. She said several customers stopped in just as they happened by.

"Everybody has been wonderful. They're excited to have a new business in town. The hunters are excited about having hunting guns, turkey calls and more," Gwen said.

Gwen said she's from a hunting family and took hunting safety course with her son when he was in Cub Scouts. She took range training later on.

"There's no other store around here that sales guns and ammunition, so why not," Gwen said on opening the store. "I just want to increase my inventory and find new vendors. I don't have a lot of holsters. I'm trying to increase my vendors so I can get some different things in people want."

Gwen's Guns and Goods is in a area that's been on the upswing in the past year. The Brickstone Building is across the street and behind there is another group of businesses, with French Press Café just opening in February.

"It's wonderful seeing all the customers coming and going and sharing customers with other people," Gwen said.

Social media pages are coming, but Gwen's Guns and Goods can be reached at 740-693-4030. It's open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
