A cache of high-powered firearms were seized early Friday in Athens after police said they searched the apartment of a convicted felon.

Members of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department’s gang unit served the search warrant on a home in Rolling Ridge Apartments.

Seized in the raid were four handguns, a pistol-grip AK-47 rifle, a semi-automatic 12-gauge shotgun and large caliber ammunition, according to police.

The 38-year-old suspect was not at the apartment when police placed him in custody.

“They timed it when he was outside the apartment where the arrest could be made safely away from the firearms,” police Lt. Jody Thompson said.

The arrest stemmed from a gunfire incident at Rolling Ridge on May 12. When police arrived in response, persons at the scene were uncooperative, but Thompson said police had access to security video which identified the suspect as a shooter.

Police secured warrants on the suspect, charging him with reckless conduct, tampering with evidence and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm in regards to the May 12 shooting. After serving the search warrant, he was also charged with six counts of being a felon in possession of firearms.

The suspect remained on Friday in the Athens-Clarke County Jail without bond on several of the charges.
