Grovetown Police Department holding their annual summer camp

GROVETOWN, Ga. (WJBF) – With school coming to an end, summer camps will soon start back up.

The Grovetown police department is holding its annual summer camp at Liberty Park. It’s one of many options for keeping kids busy this summer.

The camp was started in 1995 by Grovetown councilwoman Majorie Adams, with assistance from the police department. It was part of a program in Grovetown to help students avoid drugs.

“Back in those days, there weren’t any extracurricular activities for kids, and we thought it was a good idea to continue that program,” said Robert Eastman, Assistant Chief of Police.

Police officers, firefighters, and community members will help with the camp. Activities include a reptile demonstration, a puppeteer show, a magic show, fishing, and more.

“It’s unique in that fact, in the sense that they will get to see police officers in a different light. Other than what they see on TV. Bad things happening and stuff like that. They see us as regular people. They get to interact with us, and you know they have a better appreciation for us, and that’s one of the benefits of us having this program,” said Eastman.

Kids look forward to this camp every year and enjoy getting to know their local law enforcement.

“I think it’s a great community effort,” said Kristine Groshong, her kids third year attending. We’ve kind of formed a relationship with some of the officers that they see over and over again every year and then at different events in the community throughout the year. Those officers recognize my kids. So, it’s just a really great community-building event.”

Registration is still open, and they only allow 50 kids into the camp, so you better hurry to secure your spot.
