Group calls for LPD footage following Wednesday shooting

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Calls for transparency echoed outside of Lansing City Hall Saturday.

People who gathered there said they’re waiting for the Lansing Police Department to release footage of a shooting that wounded two if its officers.

Around 12 people, saying they are family and friends of the suspect, who was also shot in the altercation, are demanding answers.

The group’s main message on Saturday was for LPD to release any footage it has of the April 10 incident. They said it will show the suspect’s side of the story.

LPD officials say the 28-year-old suspect shot and wounded two LPD officers.

The group on Saturday was holding signs and demanding answers, saying they want open communications with LPD, and added that it has already been a hassle communicating with the police department.

“We are just here, trying to get a response from the police department,” said Brianna Ortiz, a sibling of the suspect’s.

“We’ve reached out to them numerous times; I’ve left my phone number; I’ve left my email; and nobody has contacted us on any updates on anything, even his condition. We wouldn’t have even known if he was in the hospital, if it hadn’t been for the community,” she said.

LPD has yet to release the name of the suspect, as well as the officers who were injured. The department did give 6 News the following statement:

“When appropriate, and properly cleared by MSP, we intend to release the relevant video footage of the incident. We do not want to jeopardize MSP’s investigation.”
