Groundbreaking held for Tannery Knobs ‘Raise the Flag’ project

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — A groundbreaking was held on Tuesday for the Tannery Knobs “Raise the Flag” project.

The American Legion and King’s Mountain Post 24’s project will install a 100-foot tall flag pole on the top of Tannery Knobs. Due to the composition of Tannery Knobs being compressed slate, the groundbreaking required pickaxes and sledgehammers.

Human remains found in Kingsport identified as missing Hawkins Co. man

The flag pole is expected to be delivered around May 16 and will be installed shortly after. Co-chairman of the project Bryan Lauzon said the flag will be visible from many points off of the knob.

“When you’re driving on I-26 coming east or west, you are going to see this flag pole as you near exit 23,” he said. “If you are on the Tweetsie Trail or if you are at the Doughboy’s game, or if you are playing the pickleball, you’re going to see the flag pole in the background.”

Lauzon said the flag will honor all of those who make Johnson City great.

“This is going to be known as the service flag pole, and it’s dedicated and recognizes the service of all those who contribute to making Johnson City a wonderful place to be.”

A dedication of the flag pole will take place on June 4 in conjunction with the Doughboy’s season opener game. The giant 30′ x 50′ flag will be raised for the first time at the dedication event.

Fundraising has raised $15,790 so far and several pledges and donations are pending.
