Grimsby: Man dies in hospital following river rescue

A man has died in hospital shortly after being rescued from a river in Grimsby, police said.

Emergency services were called to the River Freshney at about 07:00 BST on Wednesday.

The man was rescued from the water and taken to hospital but he died a short time later, Humberside Police said.

An investigation has been launched to identify the man and the cause of his death which officers said was being treated as unexplained.

Det Ch Insp Jon Cross said: "As a part of lines of enquiries detectives are working to understand the man's movements including how he came to be in the water.

"A scene guard remains in place while our enquiries continue, and those living in the area can expect to see an increased police presence."
