Grass fire burns at least 200 acres near Jackson Tuesday afternoon

UPDATE: Summit Township fire officials confirmed Tuesday night shortly after 10 p.m. that the Department of Natural Resources had just left the fire scene. DNR will return Wednesday morning to douse hotspots and continue the investigation into the cause of the fire.

Fire officials say while some hotspots remain, there is no concern the fire will re-ignite because there is nothing generally left to burn.

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Firefighters from and around Jackson are fighting a major grass fire just south of town in Summit Township Tuesday afternoon.

Summit Township Fire Chief Tim McEldowney tells 6 News at least 200 acres have burned.

In a video sent to 6 News by a witness – who posts on Facebook as ‘Michigan Fire Alerts’ – who was at the scene, the flames could be seen shooting high into the sky with massive plumes of black smoke that could be seen for miles around.
