Grandfather, infant killed by uprooted tree in Verona backyard

A 61-year-old man and his 6-month-old grandson were killed by a tree in a Verona backyard on Monday night, police stated.

Verona Police Chief Christopher Kiernan stated that Verona police, fire and rescue squad arrived at a West Lincoln Street home at about 7:04 p.m. after a call that a tree struck two people. First responders discovered a tree behind the home had become uprooted and landed on the two victims.

"The Verona Police, Fire and Rescue Squad's thoughts are focused on the family during this difficult and unfathomable tragic time," Kiernan said in a statement. "Please keep this family in your prayers."

Police did not identify the victims or state what caused the tree to topple.
