Grand Prairie man arrested in deadly assault of 3-year-old stepchild; police investigating

A man is facing charges in a May 11 assault that killed his 3-year-old stepson, according to Grand Prairie police.

Around 8:30 a.m. on May 11, officers responded to Arlington Memorial Hospital after medical staff had contacted authorities about a child who was transported by family members to the emergency room with injuries indicating an assault.

Due to the severity of the injuries, the boy was transported by air ambulance to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. The 3-year-old later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on May by medical staff.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the child as Zyair Amerson.

Detectives learned Zyair had been physically assaulted at his home in the 1000 block of North Highway 360 before being transported to the hospital, police said in a news release Friday.

At around 4:30 p.m. on May 11, detectives arrested 21-year-old Solnifasint Nelson on a charge of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury or death, a first-degree felony, the release states.

Nelson was the stepfather of the victim, according to police.

Authorities may file other charges against Nelson, pending the results of the medical exams of the child.

The investigation is ongoing.
