WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Gov. Laura Kelly continues to push for Medicaid expansion in Kansas. On Tuesday, Kelly was in Wichita as part of a public health conference at the Hyatt.

The governor told KSN News that Medicaid expansion would give 150,000 Kansans access to health insurance and help struggling hospitals. In the last decade, Kelly says eight rural hospitals have closed and that over half of the ones that are around are at risk of closing.

“I don’t know how many rural hospitals, health clinics and emergency rooms must close before the Legislature takes Medicaid expansion seriously. But the answer should be zero,” she said.

The bill to expand Medicaid was introduced in the House and Senate in January. Lawmakers have not debated it.

Wet, wintry weather for the second half of the week

A rally to expand Medicaid will take place on the second-floor rotunda of the Kansas Statehouse at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Kansans are invited to attend. The governor will be the headline speaker.

A poll released by the Sunflower Foundation confirmed that a majority of Kansans support Medicaid expansion, including 78% of informed voters and 83% of small business owners.
