Gov. Jeff Landry visits Louisiana National Guard soldiers at US-Mexico border

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Gov. Jeff Landry visited the southern border on Thursday, May 9 to meet with Louisiana National Guard soldiers and get an overview of Operation Lone Star.

He was joined by Brigadier General Thomas Friloux and lawmakers.

The governor approved the mobilization of Louisiana National Guard soldiers in March. Fifty soldiers were initially sent to the border to help the Texas National Guard with patrols, according to LANG. They were the first of 150 national guardsmen that would be sent to the border from Louisiana.

“I don’t think Mexico is in control of that border, I think that the cartel seems to have more control over the border in Mexico than the Mexican officials,” Landry said during a teleconference.

The governor said the mission of sending Louisiana soldiers to Texas has been successful. He said he would wait to hear from Texas’ governor before proposing that soldiers stay at the southern border.
