POLK CITY, Fla. (WFLA) — Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Wednesday that construction will begin on an Interstate 4 widening project this year.

DeSantis said 14.7 miles of I-4 from ChampionsGate to Osceola Parkway will be reconstructed.

The project will accommodate three general-use lanes, auxiliary lanes and two express lanes in the eastbound and westbound directions. Existing interchanges in the area will also be reconstructed.

DeSantis said the project was scheduled to start in 20 years, however, it will now begin in late 2024.

“This is going to be a massive expansion of lanes, you are going to have express lanes that are going to be available. Widening shoulders for emergency evacuations and then there are going to be interchanges that are going to be reworked,” DeSantis said.

The governor said the road expansion comes as he expects more people on Florida roads in the next few years.

DeSantis also signed House Bill 1301.

Looking ahead, DeSantis is “excited” for upcoming bills, including tackling crime and providing tax relief.
