Gospel rap group shares message with local youth

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Frayser is coming together to not only celebrate Good Friday, but also hear the message of one local gospel rap group.

As a way to bridge the gap between faith and activism, a coalition of 10 gospel artists have come together to share the “good news”.

“It’s always something going on through all over North Memphis,” rapper Darrel “D Mercy” James said. “But right here in Frayser, we wanted to show everybody it’s not just bad stuff going on, it’s some good stuff going on to.”

James is one of the musicians who is participating in the Bread Chaser Family Gospel Division’s Gospel Takeover.

He says their goal is to curb crime by including young people. That way the group is creating the change they want to see in their communities.

“We need some strong men that’s not scared to stand up,” James said. “I am a former gang member, you know, but I changed my life.”

Marcus McCray, an organizer for the group, says that they also want to encourage the youth to learn a trade or pursue higher education.

“We got to have opportunities for the young ones to make money, good money, not 7.25 an hour,” McCray said.

Going forward, organizers say they plan to spread their message throughout the City of Memphis and eventually across the nation.

You can check out their next performance on July 20 at Church Without Walls, which located at 1030 E.H. Crump Blvd.
