Goodwill launches final phase in Melrose Plaza project, ‘Restoring Greatness Capital Campaign’

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR)– Local business and community leaders gathered at the Dumas Center in Roanoke to celebrate the final phase in the Melrose Plaza project and launch the ‘Restoring Greatness Capital Campaign,’ on Wednesday, May 22.

During the event, guests celebrated the campaign’s progress and experienced a virtual tour of the construction progress at Melrose Plaza.

The Restoring Greatness Campaign is the last component of construction funding for the future of the Melrose Plaza, which will transform the former headquarters of Goodwill Industries of the Valleys into a transformation community hub. It will feature four distinct services, including a new grocery store, bank, wellness center, and adult high school. The multi-purpose facility will also include a community gathering space and local history tributes.

“Goodwill’s mission is to eliminate poverty, so this project is to help us do that,” said Goodwill’s Vice President of Advancement Zenith Barrett. “But we cannot do it alone and so we are working very collaboratively with many partners. Those businesses, individuals, and community organizations to really bring the Melrose Plaza to fruition.”

Goodwill officials say it has raised about half the money needed to finish the project, with the goal being $3 million.

The plaza is expected to open by the end of 2024.
