Golden Knights add Tomas Hertl at trade deadline; Stone out for regular season

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Vegas Golden Knights pulled off a major move Friday at the NHL trading deadline, acquiring San Jose Sharks forward Tomas Hertl.

The 6-foot-3, 30-year-old left-hander has spent his entire 11-year career with San Jose. This year, he has scored 15 goals and has 19 assists in 48 games.

Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon said at a Friday news conference that captain Mark Stone would miss the remainder of the regular season — and maybe more — after rupturing his spleen.

To get Hertl, the Knights gave up forward David Edstrom and a first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. In addition to Hertl, the Knights are getting a third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft and a third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft.

Hertl is recovering from knee surgery in February and might not be available to play for a few weeks.

Hertl, from the Czech Republic, ranks sixth all-time in scoring for the Sharks with 484 points (218 goals, 266 assists). He posted back-to-back 60-point seasons in 2022-23 and 2021-22.

Earlier this week, the Knights added veteran defenseman Noah Hanifin from the Calgary Flames and forward Anthony Mantha from the Washington Capitals. Both played on Thursday nights in the Knights’ 3-1 against the Vancouver Canucks.

The additions are critical as the team tries to hold onto a playoff spot after injuries decimated the roster. Center Jack Eichel and defenseman Shea Theodore recently returned, but defenseman Alec Martinez, center Brett Howden, forward William Carrier and defenseman Kaedan Korczak are still out.

Hertl served as an alternate captain of the Sharks since the 2019-20 season and has made two appearances at the NHL All-Star Game (2020, 2024).
