‘It’s going to be exciting.’ Buhach Colony High soccer standout to play for UC Merced

Buhach Colony High senior Mia Howard always had big dreams when it came to soccer.

The Thunder star made one of those dreams come true Wednesday evening when Howard during a ceremony at the school library signed her national letter of intent to play soccer at UC Merced.

“It was a super big goal of mine,” Howard said. “Ever since I was little I dreamt of playing college soccer or playing for the U.S. team. It means the world to me that I’ve finally achieved it.”

Howard is a four-year varsity starter in high school, leading the Thunder with 12 goals this past winter. She was named the Central California Conference Offensive Player of the Year as a junior after amassing nine goals and 23 assists.

“She is a very technical player with the attacking mindset needed for scoring opportunities,” said Buhach Colony coach Richard Howard, who is also Mia’s father. “Mia has the vision and ability to make a positive impact anywhere on the pitch. One thing that sets Mia apart is she is very goal oriented, which plays a huge role in her success.”

Mia Howard said she enjoyed the experience of playing for her father in high school.

“I loved playing for my dad because he always held me to a higher standard,” she said. “I was asked to be a role model for my other teammates.”

Mia Howard started playing soccer at 3 years old.

“I just love the environment,” Howard said. “I love making new friends and I’ve always loved scoring. I’ve always played forward or midfield.”

Howard says UC Merced became an attractive destination because she felt a connection with the coaching staff and players.

“I felt so welcome there,” Howard said. “I felt so at home, the team was great, the coaches were great. I love the school itself. It’s just a great fit.”

She also is looking forward to the program making the jump from NAIA to Division II.

“I’m going to be playing against a lot of former teammates and people I know,” Howard said.

Howard plans to major in kinesiology. She compiled a 3.7 GPA at Buhach Colony.

Howard is looking forward to the next chapter and competing in college.

“I’m ready to adjust playing to a higher level and playing with new girls,” Howard said. “It’s going to be exciting.”
