GJPD scam alert

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The Grand Junction Police Department sent out a release Friday warning the public of an ongoing scam reported by multiple residents.

Officials say the scam involves a well-dressed man approaching elderly women in store parking lots. The man tells the woman one of her tires is flat, and while the woman is distracted, another person steals personal belongings from their vehicle.

In all instances of this scam, the victim’s credit cards were used immediately afterward in nearby stores.

The Grand Junction Police Department has the following safety tips to protect themselves from this scam:

  • Be wary of strangers, no matter how friendly they seem. If the scammer insists you get out of the vehicle to show you the tire, tell them you will call for help; do not leave your car.

  • Be aware of your surroundings and trust your gut. If something doesn’t feel normal, it probably isn’t.

  • Never leave your purse or wallet unattended; keep your belongings with you at all times. Thieves look for crimes of opportunity.

  • Report any suspicious activity to the Grand Junction Police Department at 970-549-5000 or non-emergency dispatch at 970-242-6707.

GJPD encourages anyone who’s been a victim of theft to file a report on the GJPD website or call 970-549-5000. Officials also encourage community members to share these safety tips with friends and family.
