Lane played collegiately at Akron. He brings size (6-feet-2, 226 pounds) to a Giants receiving corps that sore lacks it after Brandon Marshall. He brings a physicality to the passing game that, after Marshall, is somewhat missing.

Lane’s physicality is because he played linebacker for the Zips before transitioning to wide receiver. He was an edge rusher who played outside linebacker and defensive end. Lane also played safety before his conversion to wide receiver which only enhanced his physicality.

He started 23 of 25 games for the Zips at wide receiver with 101 receptions for 1,800 yards and 14 touchdowns. He had 62 receptions for 1,062 yards and six touchdowns in his final year of eligibility, earning Third-team All-MAAC honors.

Lane is the son of former NBA first-round selection Jerome Lane Sr. The elder Lane was a point guard at Saint Vincent-Saint Mary School (the same high school that produced LeBron James) in Akron, Ohio before his collegiate career at the University of Pittsburgh.

On Jan. 25, 1988 during a Big East Conference game between Pittsburgh and Providence, the elder Lane broke the glass backboard with a one-handed dunk. College basketball color analyst Bill Raftery famously said “Send it in, Jerome!” after the play. The elder Lane went on to have a 13-year professional career.
