Giants head coach Ben McAdoo says players need to handle their business during their summer break

The New York Giants spent three days together at a mandatory mini-camp before embarking on their six-week break before the start of training camp.

This is the time of year that players can find themselves in compromising situations. The coaching staff are made aware of these situations usually through a phone call in the middle of the night.

Former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin received one of these phone calls when defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had his fireworks accident nearly two years ago. Coughlin’s successor, Ben McAdoo, received a phone call regarding wide receiver Roger Lewis’ arrest on OVI charges in Ohio.

“Six weeks goes by pretty quick. You just don’t want any phone calls late at night, that is all,” McAdoo said last Thursday before the players departed for their summer vacations. “But I trust the players in this locker room. I trust the staff. We are going to put ourselves in good situations and we understand the NYG never comes off.

“It is always with us, always a part of us, the name on the back of the jersey and the letters on the front always stick with us.”

McAdoo, strength and conditioning coach Aaron Welman, and retired Col. Greg Gadson spoke with the team at length on the final day of the mandatory mini-camp.

“We talked about being a pro,” McAdoo said. “We have a lot of integrity in the locker room. We talked about it and we have to trust each other, but it is about being a pro and how we handle our business mentally, physically, and spiritually.”

Pierre-Paul’s hand is a constant reminder of what can go wrong in six weeks. He appears to have learned from his mistake. Last year, he took a trip to Sweden during the six weeks between the end of mandatory mini-camp and the start of training camp. Pierre-Paul plans to “be out of the country” this year but didn’t mention where he was planning to go.

Rookies remained at the team’s facility until early this week. They need the break more than the veterans.

Not every rookie will be departing for greener pastures. Quarterback Davis Webb plans to be in New Jersey for most of the six weeks to train. He wants to use the time to familiarize himself with the offense and continue his evolution from college quarterback to NFL quarterback.
