Giant ‘NeverEnding Story’ Falkor Replica Sells Out; Internet Cannot Deal

Falkor fans, rejoice! Luck may be headed your way.

If you were a kid in the 1980s, chances are you’ve fantasized about flying on a giant, serpent-like dog dragon covered in weird, shiny pustules and stringy white fur. For those of you who weren’t — and for those who think that actually sounds pretty terrifying — welcome to the world of The NeverEnding Story.

This kids’ cult classic, based on the novel by Michael Ende, came out in 1984 and featured all manner of fantastical beasts and settings. Everything was seared into the impressionable minds of young moviegoers — from a giant, ancient, apathetic tortoise that would cover you in snot every time it sneezed to a swamp that would kill you (or, more tragically, your horse) if you got too sad.

But perhaps one of the favorite (and least traumatizing) characters in this movie was Falkor the Luck Dragon, who bore Atreyu 9,891 miles to his destiny. Luckily for mega nerds fans everywhere, one generous crafter is trying to bring a little luck to the Internet with her stuffed Falkor replica.

Last year, Lara Hosler, owner of the Etsy page GameGuardians, began selling an impressively detailed plush Falkor dragon. The hand-painted critter measured almost 4 feet long, with three types of faux fur, sculpted eyes made from polymer clay, and glittery, metallic scales.

When the Internet got word, it pretty much lost its mind.

“Wow,” wrote Hosler on her Etsy page. “The response to my Falkor has been overwhelming! I’ve had 1,500 people contact me wanting to buy one and, well, the waiting list would be years. I can’t answer all the messages.”

And with that (and the prospect of spending the rest of her natural-born life sewing Falkor replicas), Falkor was officially taken by the Nothing — or “sold out.”

But the story doesn’t end there!

“I think it’s clear that the world needs more Falkors,” continued Hosler. “I don’t have it in my heart to overprice him. People with less disposable income need more luck (dragons) right? I can only make about 15 a month, and I don’t have a factory or elves (thanks elves you missed a great opportunity guys).”

So, to keep up with demand, Hosler created a step-by-step Falkor sewing pattern and accompanying booklet that fans can buy in her Etsy shop for $14.

You know what they say: “Never give up and good luck (or a toy you really, really want) will find you.”
