German magazine publishers are honouring journalist, war correspondent and human rights activist Düzen Tekkal with this year's Press Freedom Prize.

The Media Association of the Free Press (MVFP) will present Tekkal with the award at a ceremony in Berlin on June 6, the organization said.

The award honours Tekkal's "courageous, intelligent and tireless commitment" to the freedom of the press, diversity of opinion and a pluralistic society, MVFP said.

Tekkal is the co-founder of the Hawar.help initiative, which supports women, children and minorities who are discriminated against and persecuted. She has also worked for German newspapers including Die Welt and Die Zeit.

Previous winners include the investigative centre ICJK, named after the murdered Slovakian journalist Ján Kuciak, and the journalist Can Dündar from Turkey.
