Georgetown County first responder dies of cancer at age 59

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A Georgetown County first responder died Thursday at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

Mark Young, 59, a Georgetown native, worked for the Georgetown City Fire Department, Midway Fire Rescue and Georgetown County Fire & EMS during his time as a first responder. He also worked as a safety and first aid manager at Wild Water and Wheels in Surfside Beach and Myrtle Waves in Myrtle Beach, according to his obituary.

“Our thoughts and prayers are extended out to Mark Young, his family, and friends,” the Fire & EMS said on Facebook. “Mark lost his courageous battle with cancer.”

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Ridgeway Funeral Home of Georgetown is in charge of the arrangements.
