Gender ‘X’ added to U.S. citizenship application

(WJW) – The US government has updated its naturalization application to include a third gender option.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released the revised Form N-400 Monday, which includes “X” in addition to “M” and “F” for “Another Gender Identity.”

It is the first USCIS form to include the X gender option, according to a press release.

“Historically, USCIS forms and associated secure documents have only offered two gender options: ‘Male (M)’ or ‘Female (F).’ The lack of an additional gender option on USCIS forms and secure documents for use by benefit requestors who do not identify with either male or female option creates significant barriers for those requestors.”

The gender “X” option was first included on a U.S. government passport in November 2021 after a federal lawsuit.

“We are committed to promoting the freedom, dignity, and equality of all people – including LGBTQI+ individuals,” the State Department wrote on its website explaining the change.

The State Department updated passport applications for US citizens to include three genders in April 2022.
