Geauga Park District hosting 'Bring In Your Garden Tools'

Mar. 19—For those who have a shovel that needs sharpened or who want to sharpen their knowledge of garden tool maintenance, Geauga Park District is hosting "Bring In Your Garden Tools" on March 27 at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township.

People can stop in anytime from 1 to 3 p.m. — no registration required — as naturalist Chris Mentrek will lead a session about caring for the tools. Be it a dull shovel, dirty clippers or a damaged trowel, staff help attendees clean, sharpen and spruce-up so they're ready for the warm-up, according to a news release.

Naturalists onsite will assist with routine cleaning and sharpening tasks during the program but arrange for more major repairs such as replacing a broken handle or missing spring at a later date with a drop-off and pick-up.

In his program's third year, Mentrek remarked that its previous popularity stemmed from folks who own garden tools but not the tools to maintain them.

"Now is a great time for the chores of cleaning, sharpening and maintaining those trusty, rusty garden tools that will see you through this coming spring and summer," he said in the news release. "We'll share some advice on how to clean and sharpen your shears, shovels, clippers and more, plus give you a chance to spruce up your gardening gear with our oil, steel wool and sharpening files — you just supply the elbow grease."

Back in Mentrek's childhood, tuning up his parents' garden tools was a standard winter chore for the Mentrek children.
