Gaston Day School wins $1,000 in national creativity contest

Gaston Day School was recently one of the top 10 finalists in a contest hosted by the Harlem Globetrotters and Jersey Mike’s Subs.

The school received a $1,000 prize for their entry to the Court of Creativity contest, which encouraged students to put their creativity to work in making a basketball related photo or video.

For their video, Gaston Day School third graders created towers using only newspaper and tape that could support the weight of a basketball for up to 20 seconds, according to a press release.

Kindergarteners at the school also participated by coloring drawings of basketball players to resemble themselves and writing about teamwork.

The artwork created for the contest and some basketballs were donated to the local Boys and Girls Club.

The other nine schools that made the top 10 include:

  • Clayton Intermediate School in Clayton, Delaware

  • Dream Lake Elementary in Apopka, Florida

  • Edgar Road Elementary in Webster Groves, Missouri

  • Guy E. Rowe Elementary in Norway, Maine

  • Laurel Hill Elementary School in Lorton, Virginia

  • Nova Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary in Davie, Florida

  • St. Gregory the Great Academy in Hamilton Square, New Jersey

  • Whittier Elementary School in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin

  • Williams Elementary School in Bakersfield, California

According to the release, “the challenge was open to public, private, and vocational schools with grades kindergarten through 5th grade across the United States. It was part of Jersey Mike’s and the Harlem Globetrotters’ ongoing efforts to promote healthy lifestyles, teamwork, and creativity among young people.”

This year marked the second year of Court of Creativity.

The Globetrotters and Jersey Mike’s Subs plan to make the competition an annual event, the release said.
