Gaston County’s state of emergency ends at 5 p.m. Friday

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – The state of emergency in Gaston County will end at 5 p.m. on Friday, county officials announced Friday afternoon.

The order was issued in lieu of widespread damage caused by the severe weather that moved through the area on Wednesday.

“We’ve been very appreciative of the support from multiple state agencies over these past 48 hours, as well as the tireless work of first responders, emergency management personnel, linemen and community volunteers in helping our county get back on its feet,” Gaston County Board of Commissioners Chairman Chad Brown said. “The resilience of our community is inspiring, but does not surprise me, because I know Gaston County residents are always up to the challenge when disaster strikes.”

On Thursday the National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado in Gaston and Cleveland counties.

A woman was killed when a tree fell on her vehicle Wednesday and widespread power outages forced the school district in Gaston County to shut its doors for two days.
