Gallup man charged in shooting over barking dogs

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A Gallup man is facing charges related to a shooting incident that occurred during a confrontation over barking dogs. Harley Davison Joe, 38, appeared before a federal judge Wednesday and was released pending trial.

A criminal complaint states on May 11, 2024, three people were walking their dogs in Gallup when Joe drove past in a truck. The dogs began barking at the truck. Joe stopped and confronted the group about the dogs.

The confrontation turned into an argument and Joe took out a gun. John Doe 1 saw Joe shooting the gun at him and returned fire in self-defense. Joe got back in his truck and drove off. John Doe 1 and the two other individuals ran back to their home.

Joe would later call an ambulance, saying he had been shot by someone. When the ambulance arrived, they found him at a home in Gallup and discovered he had suffered a gunshot to the abdomen. He was then treated at the Gallup Indian Medical Center.

Investigators found Joe’s green Dodge pickup at his home with blood inside and a Glock 17 handgun. Joe initially denied owning the gun. He later told agents he took the gun from under the driver’s seat after he had been shot and fired approximately five rounds towards two males who ran towards him.

Officials say if Joe is convicted, he faces between ten years to life in prison.
