Gala recognizes community leaders

May 1—LIMA — Local business leaders took a step back in time to embrace the "Great Gatsby" era Wednesday night. The Lima/Allen County Chamber of Commerce held its 22nd annual awards gala, honoring businesses and local leaders.

The theme of the event mirrored the timeless tale of a wealthy business owner.

"We always say that small businesses are the economic engines of our community," CEO Jed Metzger said. "I love small businesses and everything they do. They keep this community vibrant and alive."

The UNOH Event Center was filled with local leaders who were honored for making an impact in the community. Keynote speaker Perry proTECH CEO Patrick Summers spoke on what it means to be a good leader.

"Leadership is about execution," Summers said. "Leadership is about people following you because you made it easier for them and you put something in place for them to follow."

Summers said he became a part of the company seven years ago. He said business leaders should keep it "simple" and discover the areas where you're successful. Summers also advised the crowd on how to triumph in business.

"Communicate until you are blue in the face," Summers said. "Talk to anybody who will talk to you about your brand. Quality, greatness, energy, presence, approachability and accountability are important. If you are a leader, you need to act. Things will not change if you will not get things done. Don't be afraid to be the change agent inside your company or organization."

The event concluded with several men and women who exemplified the principles of a leader.

Jill Bakies was chosen as the Young Leader of the Year. Steady Does It was chosen as the Emerging Business of the Year. Schrader Realty was chosen as the Woman-Owned Business of the Year. Crime Victim Services was chosen as the Non-Profit Agency of the Year. Jill Ackerman was chosen as the ATHENA award winner. Service Master was chosen as the Small Business of the Year.
