Gainesville man, 74, dies in single-vehicle crash on State Road 20 in Alachua County

A 74-year-old Gainesville man was killed early Wednesday afternoon in single-vehicle crash on Southeast Hawthorne Road, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Wednesday at about 12:20 p.m.

Where did the crash happen?

On State Road 20 near its intersection with Southeast 38th Court.

FHP report

According to the FHP report, a 2003 Chevy S10 was traveling east on Hawthorne Road when it veered off the roadway and into the grassy center median where it struck a tree.

Both the driver, a 64-year-old Gainesville man, and his passenger, a 74-year-old Gainesville man, were taken to UF Health Shands Hospital. The 74-year-old man later died from his injuries.

Alachua County Fire Rescue reported that the Jaws of Life had to be used to extricate one of the men from the vehicle.
