The Funniest Reactions to Melania Trump’s Out of Africa –Inspired Wardrobe in Egypt and Kenya

First Lady Melania Trump wore a few questionable ensembles during her tour of some African countries, drawing comparisons to Michael Jackson, Indiana Jones villains, and Hannibal Lecter, among others.

Amidst political turmoil in the U.S., First Lady Melania Trump embarked on her first solo trip this week, where she visited Ghana, Malawi, Kenya, and Egypt in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development, with a specific focus on implementing programs for children in developing countries. During her much-photographed appearances, though, people couldn’t help but notice that her chosen attire had some pretty strange undertones, leaning heavily on “safari” attire many called stereotypical, and even donning an optic-white pith helmet for a Safari tour in Kenya, either blithely unaware of or choosing to ignore that head covering’s colonialist history. And then when she touched down in Egypt today, many couldn’t help but notice her choice of ensemble for the appearance—a cream suit, white button-up, black tie, and matching fedora hat—seemed similarly drawn from Out of Africa, which is a film based on a book set in . . . 1937. The Internet quickly drew up clever comparisons, some recalling the outfits worn by Michael Jackson in “Smooth Criminal,” Dr. René Belloq in Indiana Jones, and even the resort casual wear worn by the villainous Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

Trump wore the suit in question to meet with the Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and his wife, first lady Entissar Mohameed Amer. She also visited the pyramids and the Great Sphinx, where she posed repeatedly for photographers. Meanwhile, during her press conference in Egypt, which is the last stop of her four-country tour, Trump also offered her comments on Brett Kavanaugh, who is expected to be confirmed as the next Supreme Court Justice today despite allegations of sexual assault against him. “I think he's highly qualified for the Supreme Court,” she said. “I’m glad that Dr. Ford was heard, I’m glad that Judge Kavanaugh was heard. FBI investigation was done, is completed and Senate voted.” She also said that she wishes people would “focus on what I do, not what I wear,” the best response to which may have been George Takei’s:
