Full closure coming to Bangerter Highway in South Jordan – Here’s what to expect

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (ABC4) — The Utah Department of Transportation will be shutting down Bangerter Highway in both directions in South Jordan this weekend, along with a few other lane restrictions.

Starting Friday, May 17, at 10 p.m., Bangerter Highway will be closed in both directions between 9800 South and 10400 South while crews get prepared to start work on the new 9800 South interchange.

In addition to the two-way closure, the southbound lanes between 9000 South and 9800 South will also be closed. The northbound lanes in the same section will be reduced to one lane.

The closures are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, May 20, in time for the morning commute. Meanwhile, the northbound restrictions are only scheduled to last until Sunday afternoon.

“Drivers should expect delays in the area and can use 9000 South or 10400 South via 4000 West as alternate routes,” said UDOT in a statement. “Drivers traveling east and west on 9800 South will still be able to travel through the intersection and turn north onto Bangerter Highway, but will not be able to turn south.”

UDOT said the work at 9800 South is part of the organization’s Bangerter South project to convert intersections along the highway into freeway-style interchanges. The project is anticipated to be completed at the end of 2025 and will eliminate the need for stoplights along Bangerter Highway.

Who was Bangerter — and why is there a highway named after him?

UDOT also warned drivers Bangerter Highway between California Avenue and the Salt Lake International Airport will shut down for bridge maintenance starting Thursday, May 23. During the closure, the eastbound I-80 ramp to southbound Bangerter and the northbound Bangerter ramp to eastbound I-80 will close, intermittently.

“Follow posted detours and plan additional time when traveling on Bangerter Highway near the airport,” said UDOT. “Lane closures on Bangerter Highway will commence after the Memorial Day holiday and continue through mid-June with occasional ramp closures.”

Utahns can stay up to date with all of UDOT’s projects by visiting the department’s website online.
