Fuel truck careens off 15 Freeway in the Cajon Pass

A big rig hauling more than 8,000 gallons of fuel drove off the side of the 15 Freeway in the Cajon Pass early Tuesday, prompting a hazardous material response and a lengthy cleanup effort, officials said.

The crash was first reported about 12:50 a.m. on the northbound 15 Freeway between Kenwood Avenue and Blue Cut, according to San Bernardino County Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike McClintock.

"Firefighters arrived to find a gasoline tanker truck that had crashed and careened off Interstate 15 approximately 50 to 75 feet," he said.

Roughly 60 gallons of diesel fuel had been spilled, McClintock said. The tanker contained more than 8,000 of gasoline.

"Due to the hazards involved, the call was balanced to a Hazardous Materials Incident," McClintock said.

Firefighters stopped the fuel leak and worked alongside law enforcement and trucking company representatives to carefully drill into the tanker so that the fuel could be transferred into another truck.

"Despite these challenges firefighters successfully offload more (than) 8,650 gallons of fuel from the crashed tanker truck," McClintock said.

The process took more than six hours, he added.

One person was hospitalized from the collision, officials said. No other injuries were reported.
