Frozen 3 is one of Disney's most anticipated movies, as Elsa and Anna come back once again for a new magical adventure.

What new challengers will the sisters face? What's going on in Arendelle? Will we meet new characters? Does Olaf still enjoy warm hugs? Will Elsa get a girlfriend?

Unfortunately not much is known at the moment about the story and the characters, but we do know the production is in the works and it's looking very promising. There is still a long wait ahead though — Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed the threequel is set for a 2026 release.

"We're already looking forward to 2026 and beyond with Frozen 3, the first Toy Story movie since 2019, and a new Star Wars movie that brings the Mandalorian and Grogu to the big screen for the very first time," he revealed during the company's Q1 2024 earnings call on February 8, 2024.

Disney is bringing out the big guns for the next few years, hoping a new Frozen movie takes the box office by storm.

The movie is currently in production, and the work done so far has left one of the original Frozen creators "blown away".

Jennifer Lee – who wrote and co-directed the first two movies – revealed in October 2023 that the creative team is already delivering astounding work for the third movie in the series.

"I'm so excited. I don't know what I'm doing on it yet. I might be doing nothing," she said.

Lee confirmed in June 2023 that she will not direct the third movie, which marks a big change behind the scenes for the saga.

"Where we're going with Frozen did not come from me," she explained. "It came from an incredible person... And I've been blown away by it and I'm just having a blast with that team."

It's possible that Lee will still end up writing Frozen 3 and either way, she will be involved in the development of the movie as she's the chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios.

We don't know who this filmmaker is, but while we wait for further information, here's everything you need to know about Frozen 3, following its official confirmation from Disney.

Frozen 3 potential release date: When could we expect Frozen 3?

Frozen 3 hasn't confirmed a release date yet, but we know the movie will arrive in 2026.

The new movie was officially announced by Disney boss Bob Iger in February 2023, and it was Iger too who revealed it was being lined up for a 2026 release. However, he didn't give any further information on how far along the new movie is, development-wise.

There were six years between the release dates for Frozen and Frozen 2, so the waiting for Anna and Elsa's return in Frozen 3 is as long as expected.

Whenever we hear more, we'll update this piece.

Frozen 3 cast: Who's coming back for Frozen 3?

It wouldn't be a Frozen movie without Kristen Bell as Anna, Idina Menzel as Elsa, Josh Gad as Olaf and Jonathan Groff as Kristoff (and Sven).

All of them will likely return and although it hasn't been officially confirmed by Disney, Menzel hinted that they'll all be back – even though she doesn't anything about the movie yet.

"To be completely honest, they teased it to us, and I have no idea. They don't show you a script. They don't show you anything," she said in June 2023 while speaking to Billboard. "All I know is, yeah we are gonna make one, and that's it."

Elsewhere, there are likely returns from Sterling K Brown as Mattias, Jason Ritter as Northuldra member Ryder, Rachel Matthews as Ryder's sister Honeymaren and Ciarán Hinds as Rock Trolls leader Pabbie.

After flashbacks in Frozen 2, we could also see more of Evan Rachel Wood and Alfred Molina as Anna and Elsa's parents Iduna and Agnarr.

Frozen 3 plot: How does Frozen 2's ending set up a third movie?

The sequel sees Anna and Elsa head to the enchanted forest outside of Arendelle to discover why a mysterious voice has been calling to Elsa and to stop the enchanted spirits from destroying Arendelle.

It turns out that back in the past, there was a battle between Arendelle soldiers and the people of Northuldra who live in the forest, leading to the forest being blocked off from the rest of the world.

Long story short, Anna and Elsa discover that their parents were on their way to Ahtohallan to discover the source of Elsa's power when they were shipwrecked. Anna and Elsa find their parents' ship in the enchanted forest and learn that their mother was Northuldran.

What's more, their grandfather was responsible for the conflict and created a dam in the forest that was intended to weaken the Northuldran people. To right the wrongs of the past, Anna realises she needs to break the dam to free the forest.

And she does it just in time. Elsa was frozen in Ahtohallan seeking the voice, which turned out to be a memory of her mother. Elsa becomes the "fifth spirit", the bridge between the magical world and the human world.

But, as we all know, a bridge has two sides and Anna is the other one. So, Elsa stays in the forest and Anna becomes Queen of Arendelle, ensuring that the two kingdoms live happily ever after.

It feels like a natural conclusion to the arcs set up in Frozen, delivering on the promise of the producer that the two movies would tell "one complete story". Elsa has now fully accepted her magical side and Anna has found her place in the world.

Who knows what the threequel will be about at this stage, but Gad has previously said the movie would only happen if there "was a reason to exist" like with the sequel.

"I don't know if and when there will be a Frozen 3. That's way above my pay grade," he told PopCulture. "If there's always a story worth telling, I'm sure that Jennifer Lee and the incredible team over at Disney animation will tell that story one day."

Let's hope they've found that story.
