FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The state is giving both Fresno and Los Banos over $10 million each as part of California’s effort to move homeless people out of encampments and into housing.

The State of California is putting $200M into the initiative to support 20 projects in 17 communities aimed at helping people experiencing homelessness transition from encampments into housing.

The announcement on Thursday also included increased oversight of state homelessness funding; it follows the release of a state audit earlier this month suggesting state officials did not consistently track whether the huge outlay of public money improved the situation.

“This new funding will get people out of tents and into housing across California,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. “As the state provides unprecedented resources like this, we also expect accountability.”

Fresno is set to receive $10.9 million, and city officials say it will allow the city to expand its service area. City officials say the money will be used to add emergency shelter beds, street mental health services, and housing stability case managers to the City of Fresno’s outreach efforts.

Mayor Jerry Dyer says the money will help the city to “continue and expand the vital, life-changing services being provided to our unhoused population.”

Los Banos is also set to receive $11.8 million. Details about how the city would use the funding were not immediately released.

Several other cities and counties across the state will also be receiving funds to help their homeless populations. Marin County will receive $18.2 million and Los Angeles County will receive $51.5 million.
