Freeze warning for central North Carolina counties Sunday morning; frost advisory for Wake, other counties

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — As cooler air continues in North Carolina this weekend, a freeze warning has been issued for areas of the Triangle early Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said sub-freezing temperatures as low as 32 are expected for key areas of central North Carolina, including Durham County and Orange County.

The freeze warning is in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday for other counties that include Alamance, Person, Granville, Vance, Chatham, Moore and Lee, the weather service said.

“Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” forecasters said in the warning.

Cities included in the freeze warning area include Durham, Chapel Hill, Graham, Siler City, Oxford, Carrboro, Pittsboro, Carthage, Southern Pines, Hillsborough, Roxboro, Mebane, Creedmoor, Henderson, Rougemont, Pinehurst, Sanford, Kittrell and Aberdeen.

Meanwhile, in areas generally south and east, a frost advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday.

“Temperatures as low as 35 will result in frost formation,” the weather service said.

The frost advisory includes areas such as Wake County, Johnston County, Cumberland County and Wilson County.

During the advisory time frame, frost could harm or kill sensitive outdoor vegetation or plants if left uncovered, forecasters said in the advisory.

Other counties included in the frost advisory area are Warren, Halifax, Franklin, Nash, Edgecombe, Harnett, Hoke, Sampson, and Wayne.

Towns and cities in the frost advisory include Raleigh, Cary, Wake Forest, Fayetteville, Goldsboro, Warrenton, Scotland Neck, Lillington, Rocky Mount, Apex, Spring Hope,  Spring Lake, Hope Mills, Raeford, Nashville, Wilson, Angier, Clayton, Louisburg, Dunn, Enfield, Smithfield, Franklinton, Princeville, Buies Creek, Roanoke Rapids, Erwin, Norlina, Selma, Knightdale, and Tarboro.
