Free water safety class available to Sacramento residents ahead of Memorial Day

(FOX40.COM) — The city of Sacramento recently announced that it will host a free event promoting water safety and education ahead of Memorial Day.

On Sunday, city staff and community partners will be at the Pannell Meadowview Pool from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. to cover water safety topics ranging from drowning prevention and recognizing hazards to overall knowledge on how to stay safe in different aquatic environments.

Sjon Swanson, a recreation superintendent for Sacramento, said, “May is Water Safety Month and we want to educate and empower the community to be safe while enjoying their summer.”

The city adds that attendees can take part in free recreational swimming while listening to trained staff members provide safety tips, interactive demonstrations, and even lifejacket fittings.

Class participants will be required to wear swimming attire while in the water and normal pool rules will apply. Non-swimmers must be accompanied by an adult “within arms reach while in the water,” the city said.

For those concerned about water temperature, Sacramento said the pool will be heated during the event.
