Free shredding event slated at recycling center

Mar. 21—The Joplin Recycling Center will hold a free paper shredding event next month.

A mobile shredder truck from Big Bear Shredding will be available from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, at the recycling center, 1310 W. A St.

Area residents may bring old personal documents for quick shredding to help protect against someone obtaining the documents for identity theft.

The event is intended to provide large-volume shredding for up to 12 standard-sized file boxes per car.

To expedite the process, those bringing documents are asked to remove them from binders and take out binder file clips and compact discs that are sometimes part of large folders or packets and cannot go through the shredder.

Non-paper materials, such as cardboard, packing paper and brown paper sacks will not be accepted.

The types of items that can be shredded include:

—Expired credit and debit cards, credit and debit card receipts, unused credit card checks, credit card statements, canceled checks, checking and savings account statements, pre-approved credit card offers and applications.

—Investment account statements, pension account statements, paycheck stubs, wage and earnings statements.

—Phone and utility bills, retail invoices and statements, tax returns and statements, medical bills, insurance claim information, checking and savings account statements, insurance policy information, and expired identification documents like driver's licenses and passports.

There is a free paper document destruction service available throughout the year at the recycling center. There are three locked 96-gallon containers that are switched out with empty containers on a weekly basis by CRC Shredding. The process is self-serve. Residents can drop approximately 200 pages at a time through the restricted opening on the container. All paper is shredded, mixed with other non-sensitive shredded paper, pulped, and then used in the manufacture of products such as egg cartons.

The recycling center is open noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.
