Free Press photographers win top honors at annual photo contest

Detroit Free Press staff photographer Ryan Garza was named Photographer of the Year by the Michigan Press Photographers Association for the second year in a row at its annual convention in early April.
In addition, a Free Press video project by photographer Mandi Wright featuring a woman struggling with addiction won first place Multimedia Project and stories from the paper's photo series "Where We Live" were among the many photography and video stories also recognized by the statewide organization.
The photography staff took home a combined 18 awards from the MPPA, including five first places in the photography and video categories. A portrait by Wright of Wayne State fencer Bobbie Hirsch took home first place in Portrait Personality and a story about a Palestinian boy who came to Dearborn Heights for a prosthetic leg took the top award in Feature Picture Story.
Former staff photographer Sarahbeth Maney earned an honorable mention in Photographer of the Year category for the second year in a row and former photo intern Audrey Richardson, a Michigan State University student, won second place in the College Photographer of the Year category.
The honored work featured coverage by Garza of the Michigan State University school shooting, along with a story about a demolition derby in Cadillac, and Detroit's annual Easter Fest by photographer Eric Seals.
