Fraud charge against Bennett man dismissed

Apr. 13—Four charges against a Bennett man were dismissed April 1 in Lee County Superior Court.

Jeremy Wade Shelton, 46, had been charged with habitual felon, financial card theft, financial card fraud and identity theft, all felonies.

In a court document, a prosecutor asked that the habitual felon charge be dismissed because "state unable to prove beyond reasonable doubt all elements of underlying charge."

Shelton had allegedly taken a First Bank debit card and ran up several charges totaling $301.

A Sanford resident was the alleged victim. In January 2020, he said he discovered four unauthorized transactions in 2019 from Randolph Electric of Asheboro.

According to court documents, Shelton has violated probation.

Lee County issued a writ of execution against Shelton in Aug. 16, 2021 in the amount of $2,565 plus 8% interest for not showing up to court. However, it could not be served. It was sent to the Chatham County Sheriff, who noted that Shelton's address was in nearby Randolph County. Shelton later posted $500 for a $5,000 bond on Dec. 5, 2022.

In a court document, Shelton said he is disabled.
