Former Gamecock Meechie Johnson announces new college home

Meechie Johnson is heading back home for his final years of collegiate eligibility.

The now-former Gamecock announced on social media Tuesday that he is committed to Ohio State after spending the last two years at South Carolina. Johnson was the leading scorer for the Gamecocks last season, averaging 14.1 points per game.

Johnson, originally from Cleveland, played two seasons at Ohio State before committing to the Gamecocks in 2022 ahead of head coach Lamont Paris’ first year at the program. With the Buckeyes, Johnson played in 43 games and played in two March Madness games. Johnson also joined the program a year early out of high school, heading to Ohio State for the 2020-21 season.

Johnson took to social media after announcing he entered the transfer portal, saying he had “all love” for South Carolina and that the decision was based on what he said was best for his family. Johnson was the first commitment Paris had after being hired at South Carolina.
