Former Foley Mayor John Koniar has died; memorial service scheduled
FOLEY, Ala. (WKRG) — Former Foley Mayor John Eldon Koniar died at his Foley home on Friday, March 22, News 5 has learned.

An accomplished city leader
According to his obituary, Koniar was appointed mayor in 2006 and re-elected three times, serving for 14 years until 2020.
While mayor, Koniar accomplished many things, including creating the South Baldwin Chamber Balloon Festival, Foley Railroad Museum, OWA Amusement Park, the Pedestrian Bridge, and more. He also served on the Riviera Utilities Board for 14 years.
Before becoming mayor, Koniar was elected to the Foley City Council from 1980 through 2006. Between 1996 and 2006, Koniar served as Mayor Pro Tempore.

About John Koniar’s life
Koniar was born on Dec. 6, 1943, in Meridian, Miss. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1961 and attended the University of Alabama, where he earned a degree in industrial engineering.
He married Linda Sue Lee on July 2, 1966. They had two sons, Todd and Rob, and lived in Nashville, where Koniar worked for Shell Oil Company.
In September 1965, Koniar entered active duty in the United States Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served as a forward observer in Korea and was honorably discharged as a captain on Aug. 30, 1969.
In 1971, Koniar joined Vulcan Inc. and settled his family down in Foley, where he and Linda had their daughter, Mell. After working at Vulcan for 37 years, Koniar retired as vice president of sales.

Memorial services scheduled
Visitation for Koniar will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, with the service to follow at First Presbyterian Church of Foley.
The graveside service will be held at Pine Rest Cemetery following the church service.
