Former Clemson wide receiver Hunter Renfrow is in Clemson. Here’s where he’s staying

You never know who may pop up at the Swinney household.

This week, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is hosting his former player and current Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver, Hunter Renfrow, who also spoke to the Tigers’ team Wednesday.

“He’s staying in my basement,” Swinney said. “He and (wife) Cami and baby Collins have been in my basement since Sunday, so they’re hanging out with us.”

Renfrow’s offseason visit comes on the heels of a stellar 2021 campaign with the Raiders. The former walk-on started nine of 17 games played and totaled 1,038 yards — ninth-most in the NFL — and nine touchdowns on 103 receptions during his third season in the league.

The Raiders finished the season with a 10-8 record and second in the AFC West before losing to the Cincinnati Bengals, 26-19, in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

Renfrow became a Clemson legend during the College Football Playoff national championship game on Jan. 9, 2017. He caught the 2-yard, game-winning touchdown from Deshaun Watson with one second on the clock as part of a 21-point fourth quarter for the Tigers in their 35-31 victory over Alabama for Clemson’s second national title.

In addition to speaking to the team Wednesday, Renfrow came back to his old stomping grounds to watch Clemson’s Monday and Wednesday practices. Swinney said he’ll leave for Disney World for a couple days then come back around Sunday when Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is expected to also make a visit.

Despite football taking a break, Renfrow’s competitive side never rests. Swinney made sure to mention he got the edge over Renfrow and son Will Swinney in basketball, though, playing until 11 p.m. the other night.

“For the record, me and Dylan, one of the guys, took he and Will down,” the elder Swinney said. “Just for the record. Two-on-two. That is absolute fact. He wasn’t real happy about that. It’s like the Olympics at the Swinney house every day right now.”
