Forest Service: Greene Mountain Fire still 80% contained as crews hope for rain

GREENE COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) – The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) reports crews have prevented a Greene County wildfire from growing since Friday.

According to the USFS, the Greene Mountain Fire has remained 80% contained as of Monday evening. USFS Public Information Office James Heaton said the fire is expected to remain at that containment through the rest of Monday due to the rough and hazardous terrain.

The Midewin Interagency Hotshot Crew has been at the scene of the fire working all day Monday extinguishing hotspots.

Heaton said crews will continue to battle the wildfire until enough rain falls, which is forecasted to occur Tuesday.

However, Heaton said that with the predicted rain could come high winds, which firefighters will monitor. Crews will maintain and reinforce fire lines as needed.
