Forest Service conducts 737-acre prescribed burn in Craig and Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The U.S. Forest Service says residents in Blacksburg and New Castle may see smoke hovering over the area due to a prescribed burn.

The department says the burn will be about 737 acres in the Sinking Creek area, near Craig and Montgomery Counties. As a result, residents and forest visitors may see and smell smoke for a few days.

The Road 630 and 10850 will be blocked off for public and fire personnel safety.

“These burns are intentionally ignited and managed to reduce hazardous fuels and improve the overall forest health. Land and fire managers continually work to reduce vegetation and hazardous fuels through mechanical thinning, prescribed fire, and other treatment projects around the Forest,” said the U.S. Forest Service.

The burn will be completed over the next few days and smoke will settle in the valley at night.
