Flower Moon tonight: May’s Spectacular Full Moon
As spring reaches its peak, the night sky offers a special treat known as the “Flower Moon”
This full moon in May is named for the abundance of blooming flowers that are part of the season. The name Flower Moon comes from Native American traditions that named each full moon to mark different times of the year. The Flower Moon indicates a period when the earth is bursting with life and ready for planting. As spring brings longer days and warmer temperatures, flowers bloom plenty. The full moon’s light highlights these natural changes, creating a striking night-time scene.
Astronomically, the Flower Moon is the full moon that happens in May, occurring when the moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun, fully illuminating it. This alignment makes the moon appear particularly bright in the night sky. To best view the Flower Moon, find a location away from city lights with a clear view of the horizon. As the moon rises, its bright light will cast a glow over the landscape.
